New ERAS Data Analysis Released

Decoding Geographic and Setting Preferences in Residency Selection

The AAMC has released preliminary data on how applicants indicated their preferences for U.S. geographic regions and settings. The data compares the three approaches to program signaling and explores possible implications about signal-to-interview invitation conversion. This and other residency data are available on the ERAS Statistics webpage.

ERAS Data Snapshot

Early season data show applications per applicant drop 3.4%.

This is the first time in more than a decade that this number has dropped, and some specialties experienced a decrease of 20% or more in the number of applications per applicant. This indicates that our ongoing efforts to reduce costs to applicants and enable holistic applicant review for programs are on the right track and underscores the value of continued collaboration across the transition to residency community.

New DWS Analytics for Schools.

This new tool is automatically available within Deans Office Workstation (DWS) and makes it easier to access and export rich, valuable ERAS data:

  • Track students’ progress through the current ERAS season.
  • Examine students’ individual actions in the current season.
  • Review data and trends in student activity across ERAS seasons.

The AAMC and Thalamus Form Strategic Collaboration.

The AAMC and Thalamus are collaborating to accelerate innovation across the transition to residency process. Residency and fellowship programs now receive complimentary access to the Thalamus interview management platform (Thalamus Core and Itinerary Wizard) and Cerebellum, a novel data and analytics dashboard to assess recruitment outcomes, specifically from a diversity, equity, inclusion, and geographic perspective.

The 2024 MyERAS application has been enhanced to enable applicants to highlight key information about their experiences and career goals with residency and fellowship programs. The new integrated components includes an updated experiences section, geographic preferences for both residency and fellowship applicants, and program signaling for residency applicants.

ERAS® PROGRAM LEADERSHIP

Meet our senior director, Patrick Fritz

As the senior director of admissions and selection application services (ASAS), Patrick leads the strategic direction and operations of the ERAS and American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®) teams. Prior to taking on this new role in 2022, Patrick served as the senior director for the AMCAS program for four years, where he oversaw the development of the AMCAS for Schools analytics platform and the Choose Your Medical School selection tool. Patrick’s role reflects the commitment outlined in the AAMC’s strategic plan — as well as the community’s goals in admissions and residency selection — to identify diverse, capable future physicians, and to support learners at the undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education levels as they navigate these application processes.

The newly created ASAS team is focused on enhancing the ERAS suite of products, delivering data to all ERAS program participants to help improve informed decisions, and leading research that will improve the transition to residency process. The team is also streamlining the 2024 MyERAS application, incorporating questions and insight from the supplemental ERAS application, and expanding outreach and engagement efforts to improve transparency between programs and applicants.

Patrick earned a bachelor of arts in political science from Marquette University and a master of business administration from American University
