Welcome to AAMC CORE Leadership Development

Prepare for leadership challenges in academic medicine with us

Change in academic medicine and science is inevitable. But one fact remains. We all share the common goal of having a positive and lasting impact on the communities we serve.

What's New?

At the AAMC, our goal has always been to prepare you to be leader-ready for any challenge. Our leadership program is evolving – based on feedback we’ve received from you, we’re prioritizing the skills and capabilities YOU need to lead academic medicine and science now and into the future.  Our programming continues to focus on real-life challenges experienced in our community and will prepare you for success in a dynamic and uncertain environment.

AAMC CORE Leadership Development focuses on enhancing an individual’s core leadership skills and capabilities through a series of progressive learning experiences at four key levels, effectively addressing their most pressing challenges.

Leading Self

  • Aspiring leaders
  • Individual contributors
  • Experienced leaders without formal leadership training

Leading Others & Teams

  • Individuals transitioning to project lead, manager, or supervisor
  • Informal and formal leaders
  • Supervisors with direct reports
  • Experienced leaders seeking to sharpen team development skills

Leading Department or Mission

  • Emerging and established leaders of departments, mission areas or functions
  • Experienced individuals leading across the institution

Leading Institution

  • C-suite or executive leaders
  • Emerging leaders with significant leadership experience

We’re excited to launch a pilot of our first program
Leading for Impact in June 2024 for those who are leading a department, unit, or mission at an AAMC member institution. Learn more below.

Leading for Impact

By attending Leading for Impact, you will have an opportunity to develop actionable strategies that address your unique leadership challenges related to shaping organizational culture, leading through change, and strategic implementation.

As an organizational leader, you may not be able to rely solely on existing knowledge and experience to lead effectively. Rather, success at this level often means embracing a growth mindset and having the self-awareness to expand the skills, behaviors, and capabilities to achieve organizational goals and advance priorities.

  • Audience: Experienced leaders, including faculty, professional and administrative staff, who are leading a department, unit, or mission at an AAMC member institution.
  • Dates: June 25-27, 2024
  • Location: AAMC Learning Center Washington, D.C.
  • Format: In-person
  • Pilot class size: 30 – 50 participants
  • Credentials: CME

Why Attend the Pilot?

The Leading for Impact pilot is the premier of the program’s curriculum.  As a pilot participant you will be able to leverage the expertise of the program’s faculty, business leaders and esteemed leaders in academic medicine and science, to enhance your leadership abilities at a reduced registration fee. You’ll engage in skill development, action planning, practical application, and peer collaboration sessions, providing feedback on program aspects for refinement before the official launch.

Whether you attend the pilot or a later offering, the program’s impact on your ability to lead successfully remains the same. Upon completing, you will be ready to immediately:

  • Lead collaboratively to drive change at your institution.
  • Align organizational culture to lead change initiatives.
  • Apply a systems-thinking approach to decision making and strategy implementation
  • Discover techniques for influencing others and align goals with strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

This suite of programs offers a unique learning opportunity to bring people together from across academic medicine and science. By engaging with a diverse group of peers, you will develop a community of individuals who can help problem solve real-world challenges and expand your knowledge of other systems and roles that support medical education, health care, medical research, and community collaborations.

A key differentiator of our programs is the contextualization of leadership content and activities to the academic medicine and science environment.

Each program will provide an opportunity to create individualized plans that translate knowledge to action, dedicated time for personal reflection of concepts learned, and building long-term relationships with a community of peers.

Over the next few years, the AAMC will unveil four CORE leadership development programs curated for audiences ranging from new and emerging leaders to experienced leaders. This suite of offerings will enable you to build a strong foundation at every stage of your career and address challenges most prevalent for individuals at that level.

It’s important to note that individuals may sign up for any program, regardless of level, should they determine the topics covered are relevant and applicable to their skill needs. Additionally, a formal leadership position is not required for the Leading Self and Leading Teams programs as people in all roles and all levels may attend.

The program will launch in 2025; however, an official date won’t be confirmed until the pilot concludes, and we incorporate revisions based upon participant feedback. The launch will take place in-person at the AAMC Learning Center in Washington, D.C.

The Leading Self program is the second to be developed. Focus groups have been conducted and the primary program themes include leadership identity, building leadership capabilities, and demonstrating impact. We aim to pilot the Leading Self program in 2025. Additional details will become available in late fall 2024. Sign up to be included in future outreach.

The third program to be developed is the Leading Others and Teams program followed by the final Leading the Institution program. Dates have not been determined and focus groups for these two programs have yet to be conducted. If you are interested in learning more about these programs, and/or your role and responsibilities fall within these categories, please Sign Up to be notified when recruitment begins for these focus groups.

CORE leadership development programs will eventually be delivered both virtually and in-person. After program launch, prospective participants will be able to determine which format works best within their budget and personal and professional responsibilities. Please note the pilot and launch delivery format may vary among the programs.

Program frequency varies. Sign Up for updates to be notified when additional information becomes available about any of the AAMC CORE leadership development programs.
